Craig's Job
Just a little update on my job situation. I'm not trying to take the thunder away from Audry's promotion(which is really awesome by the way), but I finally have a new job. I'm working in the Geek Squad at Best Buy. Unfortunately, I can't get anybody discounts so don't ask. If you do ask I will completely ignore you and never talk to you again. That's a promise. Just kidding. Or am I?

La Vernia outfielder signs with military institute
Robert C. McDonald
Wilson County News
June 10, 2008
LA VERNIA — Just days before receiving his high school diploma, recent La Vernia graduate Colton Kruse had another reason to celebrate. The talented athlete was busy signing his letter of intent to attend school and play baseball for Marion Military Institute (MMI) in Alabama.
After considering a number of schools, including Texas Lutheran University, Sam Houston State University, and the University of Texas at San Antonio, Kruse eventually decided on MMI.
“It’s been a dream of mine to play baseball in college,” Kruse said. “MMI really came through for me.”
According to Kruse, the relationship with MMI began when the school’s recruiters were at a La Vernia baseball game, scouting a player from the other team. It was at that time they took notice of Kruse’s talent. They later approached Kruse and began discussing scholarship options.
“We’re excited to have Colton,” said MMI baseball Coach Jake Wells. “He’s a great player.”
La Vernia High School baseball Coach John Elder was also on hand for the signing. He praised Kruse as well, saying, “He is a good leader and has a strong work ethic.”
Kruse credited his team, coaches, and parents for helping him achieve his goals. When asked about any one game or moment from his senior season, Kruse said the whole season was a highlight. He said he would never forget the way his team and coaches all came together.
At this time, Kruse is uncertain what he will focus his major coursework on at school. He is also uncertain if attending a military academy will lead to a military career, but he isn’t ruling anything out at this time.
When asked how he felt about attending a military academy, Kruse simply said he was excited. He’s not worried about the extra demands a military school will put on him.
As for Kruse’s parents, they aren’t worried either. In fact, his mother, Teri, said she liked the fact that he’s going to a military school.
“Since he’s going so far away, I think it’s a good thing,” she said. “The added structure will help with the adjustment.
“He’s a good kid,” she added. “He’ll do great.”

Website Update
I thought I would post some information about the new website menu on here first and then later in an email for the people who don't check the kruse news all the time. I'm sure since you are on this page you have noticed that the menu for the kruse website has changed pretty drastically. I have been working on a new menu of one type or another for about a year now. The other menu's that I tried never seemed to work right until I found this menu. I love this menu. It's elegant and simple to use. It may take some time to get used to, but it takes up so much less space than the old one. Also, if you were very observant you noticed that their were three brand new links. I won't tell you what two of them are because I want you to find them, but also because they don't actually go anywhere yet. All the times I've been telling you that I was working on some things for the website these were it. The one I will tell you about is "The Memory Book". You may remember this from when Granny and Grandpa gave them out to all of their kids. I have made it more useful. Thank You goes to Nancy for lending me the original files so that I was able to use the text without scanning it in. The pictures are of higher quality than was able in the Memory Book before. And last but not least is my favorite feature of the new Memory Book. It is completely searchable. You can search for people's names or phrases or just any word you can think of and it will find it, if it is there to be found. When you click on the link for the Memory Book, which is under Kruse History, you will be taken to a page unlike any other page on the website. It is pretty devoid of stuff accept for the actual Memory Book. At the top of the Book is a navigation bar. You can do many things with the navigation bar and I urge you to play around with it and figure stuff out, but that is where the search bar is. It is pretty obvious. It has the word 'Search' in the box where you type what you are looking for. I urge you to try the search out and be amazed at what you can find and how much more useful the Memory Book really is now. Now go out and enjoy the website.

NOW THEY'RE COOKING
Prestigious name attached to Pearl facility
BY JOHN GRIFFIN EXPRESS-NEWS DINING EDITOR
It's official: The culinary school at the Pearl Brewery is now the Culinary Institute of America, San Antonio. Word couldn't have reached school officials at a more advantageous time.
"Less than 48 hours ago, we found out" the final approval for the Culinary Institute of America's takeover of the school had been received, director of education Shelley Grieshaber told the fifth graduating class Friday. That was enough time to ensure that the 16 students' diplomas as well as their chefs' whites - used instead of graduation robes - would bear the new name.
The school had originally been called the Center for Foods of the Americas when it opened in early 2006. From here on out, the name CFA will be used to denote the school's program for Latin American culinary studies, Grieshaber said.
The formation of a Latin Cuisines Advisory Committee, to help create the CFA's curriculum, was also announced Friday.
Members include culinary ex-perts from throughout the country and South America. Along with local chefs Andrew Weiss-man of Le Reve, Scott Cohen, James Sanchez of Acenar and Johnny Hernandez of True Flavors Catering - all Culinary Institute of America graduates - the board will include Rick Bayless of Frontera Grill Chicago as well as chef and culinary historian Maricel Presilla and Robert Del Grande of Houston's Care Annie.
The committee has to start at the beginning, because little has been recorded about Latin cuisine, Hernandez said. Legendary chef Auguste Escoffier codified the rules of French cooking that are still taught at the Culinary
Institute of America today, he said, but "there is not anything like that in the Mexican and Latin cultures."
Instructor Diana de la Vega, who ran the restaurant E1' Na-ranjo in Oaxaca, and Latin cuisines specialist Elizabeth Kossick will head to Mexico and South America in the future to record culinary practices that will make up the school's library and be the basis of its classes.
In the beginning, 60 percent of the work will be done in Mexico, Kossick said, while the remainder will focus on cuisines from countries such as Brazil and Peru, which are attracting a growing interest on the culinary scene.
De la Vega's first two classes will be on Regional Mexican Cuisine: Puebla and Oaxaca and Mexico's Com Kitchen, which are scheduled for March and April. Both are geared toward culinary professionals.
In the meantime, work on the Pearl property, under the management of philanthropist Kit Goldsbury's Silver Ventures, is progressing at a steady pace. Scaffolding on the main building, the Brew House, was recently re-moved, and the Full Goods Building, which will house shops and a restaurant run by Hernandez, should open in early summer. The next culinary facility on the campus, which will house the classrooms and library for the Latin culinary program, should be finished by spring 2010, Grieshaber said.
Her schedule shows no signs of slowing, either. Shortly after the commencement, she led an orientation class for the next 3O-week certificate class, which begins Monday.
